Haleakalā Backcountry Reopens After Assault on Hiker

The backcountry of Haleakalā National Park on Maui reopened to park visitors on Wednesday night after a two-day search for a suspect in a reported assault.

Chief Ranger Ari Wong said that after an “exhaustive search,” he is “confident that the assailant is no longer in the crater.”

The incident was reported by a female hiker on Sunday, July 15, 2018.

All trails within the park are open today, July 19, 2018 and the park will resume issuing backcountry permits for cabins and campers.

Park rangers were assisted by various law enforcement agencies including Maui Police Department, Honolulu Police Department canine units, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
