Paddle for Life Anniversary Event Raises $240K for Maui Cancer Community

This year’s 10th Anniversary edition of Pacific Cancer Foundation’s Paddle for Life event raised more than $240,000. “This is fabulous news but in actuality the true success of this event is the beauty of our cancer community coming together,” said PCF executive director Nancy La Joy.

This year more than 500 people came together as cancer patients, survivors and supporters on the “Paddle for Life” journey.  “People paddle in support of each other and their friends and family. They paddle both in honor and memory of those they love. That love is felt throughout the weekend,” said La Joy.

“It is through this journey and the sport of paddling and Hawaiian culture that people can heal, laugh, build confidence and make new friends both on and off the water,” said La Joy.

The symbolic journey took place in October, and began on the West Maui shoreline at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach, with cancer patients, survivors and supporters traversing the ʻAuʻau Channel to the shores of Mānele Bay on Lānaʻi.

Representatives with the Pacific Cancer Foundation say, “There is a remarkable parallel between an ocean paddling voyage and the journey experienced by cancer patients and survivors.” The 36-mile round-trip takes great mental and emotional strength, and is as much spiritual as it is physical.  “Both require patience and perseverance. And, ultimately, it takes a team to make the journey successful,” organizers said.

All proceeds from this year’s event benefit the Pacific Cancer Foundation and Maui’s cancer community.
