Sex Assault Charges Against Former Maui Coach
A Maui grand jury returned an 18 count indictment on March 8, against Jonathan Furtado for sex assault charges stemming from alleged offenses against a teen girl for incident that allegedly occurred 10 years ago.
According to the indictment, the charges include 17 counts of first degree sex assault for offenses that allegedly occurred between August of 2009 to December of 2010 when the alleged victim was 14 to 15 years old; and one count of second degree sex assault that allegedly occurred in December of 2014.
The alleged sex assault victim is now 23 years old. In 2009, she was a student and basketball player, while Furtado was her coach. Media reports indicate that Furtado was a former coach at Seabury Hall.
In a social media post to Maui Now last year, the alleged victim said, “I got taken advantage of and manipulated by him. He was a person I trusted and a person that I thought I owed my whole life to. As I got older, I figured out that this isn’t right. That a 28-year-old should not be ‘falling in love’ with a 14-year-old.”
At the time, the woman said she wanted to break her silence after finally realizing that what she went through was wrong.
According to court records, bail was set at $1 million, and Furtado posted a security bail bond and was released on Monday.
Maui Now was unable to reach Furtado for comment at the time of this publication.
