A trio of hikers spent the night in the mountains above Keʻanae after they unexpectedly encountered a landslide that prevented them from their intended path.

Maui fire officials say a father and daughter, along with another adult male had set out at around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019 for some hiking and sightseeing.

The three had planned on doing a loop hike, but a landslide blocked their path, and the hike back to their original starting point was too long to be completed before dark.

Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety Assistant Chief of Support Services, Val Martin said the group was able to hunker down and spend the night in the forest until they could make their way back with daylight the following day.

Family members had contacted authorities when the trio did not return on time and a search for them was conducted this morning.

Shortly after fire fighters and Maui police started the search, the three hiker were able to walk out on their own and did not require any assistance or medical attention.

“They did the right thing by staying put in the darkness and letting others know where they were going to be,” said AC Martin.
