Hikers Rescued From Rising Water at ‘Īao Valley

Two hikers visiting Maui from the mainland were rescued after becoming stranded by rising waters at ʻĪao Valley on Sunday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:39 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019.

Maui Assistant Fire Chief of Support Services, Val Martin, said firefighters were able to run a rope system and provide life jackets to assist to females across the river and back to safety without using the department’s Air-1 helicopter.

The individuals were part of a larger group of five visitors that were hiking when the incident occurred.

Fire officials say it was raining in the mountains at the time of the rescue.
