Family of Lahaina Woman Asks To Celebrate Her Life
The family of Caela Aviel Venema, 31, says they want her to be remembered as full of “laughter and love” with a number of upcoming events.
They also want the public to know that they are “working closely with the Maui Police Department” in regards to the circumstances surrounding her death. Officers discovered Venema’s body in her truck, located in a Waineʻe Street parking lot on the night of July 5th.
“The world is now without one of its brightest stars. Caela was a divine light and will forever be remembered,” said Caela’s immediate family in an email to Maui Now. “Her spirit was always joyous, full of laughter and love. Her family and friends will carry Caela in their hearts, knowing that she is an angel looking over them.”
In response to those posting their own unfounded theories on social media about Caela’s death, the family asked that the public “respect their need for privacy” regarding the investigation. In the meantime, there will be public events for those wanting to pay tribute to Caela scheduled over the next several days:
- A Smokehouse BBQ event on July 11 and 12, free pūpū and drink specials with $10 donation for Caela’s services;
- a Wahikuli Beach Paddle Out on July 14 at 7:30 a.m. Paddle boards, canoes and other flotation devices welcome; and
- a Sunset Celebration at Lahaina Jodo Mission also on July 14, at 4 p.m.
A gofundme account in memory of Caela has also been set up by the family.
