County of Maui 9 a.m. Update on Flossie Potential Impacts

Tropical Storm Flossie is expected to gradually weaken and pass northeast of the state Sunday night and Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

Mayor Michael Victorino, Maui Emergency Management Agency staff, Hawaii National Guard personnel, County department staff and other agencies video teleconferenced with counties from the rest of the state and Governor’s Office for the update during its daily briefing this morning.

Flossie is currently about 760 miles east of Hilo. Potential hazards for Maui County are high surf for east-facing shores as well as localized heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Weather impacts are expected to build late today and into Sunday, with peak impacts affecting Maui County on Sunday night and Monday.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “Maui County and Hawaiʻi County are still susceptible to tropical storm force winds. I ask all of our residents and visitors to remain vigilant, make preparations and stay safe.”

Residents are asked to please tie down or store all loose objects including potted plants and properly secure propane tanks. Residents should also have a 14-day supply of water and nonperishable food as well as a first-aid kit, portable radio, flashlights and extra batteries.
