Update: 8:23 p.m. 9.11.2019:
A traffic accident has claimed the life of a 41-year-old Kahului man earlier this evening, Maui police confirmed.
The car crash was reported at about 5:09 p.m. in the parking lot outside of Ross and the old Kahului Safeway store.
According to Maui police, the man was operating a 1996 Acura sedan, climbed a raised parking island, made an abrupt hard turn and collided into a parked 2003 Mazada passenger van that was occupied by a lone female.
The operator of the Acura then continued driving and crashed into an unoccupied 2006 Ford escape and a 2019 Nissan. Both vehicles were unoccupied.
The operator of the Acura died at the scene. His name is being withheld until MPD investigators are able to notify his family members.
The lone occupant of the van, a 24-year-old woman from Kahului, reported minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
According to MPD, the operator of the Acura was not wearing a seatbelt.
The involvement of alcohol and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still pending. MPD officials have ruled out speed as a factor in the crash.
This is Maui County’s sixteenth fatality, compared to twelve this time last year.
