Maui’s Kurt Suzuki Headed to World Series with Nationals

Maui’s Kurt Suzuki is headed to the World Series for the first time in his 13-year major league career.

The Baldwin High School graduate joins his Nationals teammates after the Washington team defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in a 7-4 victory on Tuesday for the National League pennant.

The major league catcher has played for the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins over the years, but this is his first time he will be playing in the World Series.

Mayor Victorino congratulated Suzuki saying, “It’s a dream for baseball players from Little League through the Major Leagues to play in the World Series, and that dream will come true for Kurt Suzuki. It takes an incredible amount of sacrifice and dedication to achieve the highest level of any sport. So, I appreciate what Kurt and his family have gone through to get to this high point in his career.”

“Joycelyn and I, and our ʻohana, could not be happier for Kurt and his family. We wish them all the best. We’ll be cheering for the Nationals and for Kurt to bring home a championship ring.”

The Nationals play the winner of the AL Championship Series. Houston is currently leading the series 2-1 over the Yankees with potentially four games remaining.

The World Series game will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019.
