Health Department Recalls Potentially Contaminated Vegetables

Hawaiʻi residents are being cautioned against potentially contaminated vegetable products that have been distributed throughout the islands.

The state health department issued the warning earlier today, stating that the Mann Packing Company, Inc. is voluntarily recalling its series of produce that may be infected with Listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

DOH officials say no illnesses associated with the Mann Packing products have been reported.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” a DOH press release read.

According to the department, Mann Packing announced the alert “out of an abundance of caution” and is investigating the issue.

The recalled products are packaged with the “Best If Enjoyed By” date of Oct. 11, 2019 to Nov. 16, 2019.

Consumers are being urged to dispose of any recalled products in an appropriate waste container.
