After 17 Years, Oyako Tei is Closing its Doors
Family-owned hole in the wall Oyako Tei has been serving up local grinds in the Kahului industrial area for nearly two decades.
But the longstanding mom and pop shop recently announced “with great sadness” that the lease for their Wākea Avenue location has not been renewed.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all of you,” a poster hanging on the storeʻs facade read.
“Together we have laughed and cried, watched your children grow and catered your milestones. I have loved cooking your garden vegetables and recreating generations old dishes from our childhood.”
The storefront signs noted that although the owners’ “forced retirement comes 10 years too soon,” they hope to reopen their eatery at another location.
“These aunties are old but we still got some kick left,” the announcement added.
The shop will close for good on Saturday.
While the owners are mourning the end of an era, they are also encouraging community members to “keep supporting your local vendors, small businesses and each other.”
