James Allen Louis, 74, of Haʻikū, passed away on Feb. 23, 2020 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on June 23, 1945 to Henry Louis and Mary Perry. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Kāʻanapali Golf Course. James is survived by his wife, Janet Louis; Daughters, April Louis of Honokowai, Maui, Jacyann Louis of Las Vegas, Nevada; Brothers, Anthony Louis of Kahului, Maui, Robert Louis Of Lahaina, Maui; Three grandchildren, Eric-James Louis-Peterson, Tiare-Lynne Louis-Peterson, and Rochelle Kaialiilii. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Service will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020, at Ballard Family Mortuary. Visitation will also be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Ballard Family Mortuary; burial will follow 11 a.m. at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.

February 14, 1933 – February 24, 2020
She is survived by Daughters – Georgiana May (Harvey) Uwekoolani, Henrietta Eva “Cookie” Romias; Son – John Wayne “Bombo” (Regina) Galacia; Brothers – Michael and Frank Cruz; Grandchildren – William (Denise) Uwekoolani, Dwight (Tami) Romias, Dwayne Uwekoolani, Dexter Romias, Arthurine (Jerry) Solomon, Deanne (Mathew) Moritz, Delilah (John) Pante, Desiree (Jorge) Reyes, Morris Uwekoolani and Alana (Jensen) Cayan; 29 Great Grandchildren; 11 Great Great Grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.Mom was Blessed, she lived a full life. Her hobbies were crocheting, knitting, dancing and singing Karaoke. She had a way with people, she loved to tell jokes and make people laugh and smile. She was a joy to the residents at Hale Makua Wailuku, while working there. While she was cleaning, she would get to know the residents and entertain them with her singing. Her greatest joy was spending time with family, especially her Grandchildren. She would always cook whatever they wanted. She played games with them and always made them laugh. We Thank the Lord for receiving her and giving her peace and comfort at the end. Her presence will be missed but her memories will always remain with us.Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 at Ballard Family Mortuary Kahului. Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Luncheon to follow. Our Family would like to extend a special mahalo to all the staff at Hale Mahaolu Adult Day Care Kahului, Hale Makua Kahului and Hospice Maui for the compassion and care shown to our Mother and Family. October 1, 1956 – February 24, 2020
Catherine “Cathy” L. Nobriga Kim of Kahului, President and General Manager of Maui Soda & Ice Works Ltd., passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020 in Wailuku at Hospice Maui surrounded by her family. She was 63 years old.Born on Oct. 1, 1956 in Wailuku, she is the only daughter among four brothers of the late David “Buddy” and Barbara L. Nobriga. She was educated at St. Anthony School and the University of Hawai’i Manoa where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration.Like her family and father before her, Cathy dedicated her life to family, the family business, and community service. As the leader of Maui Soda & Ice Works she upheld the Nobriga Family’s standard of conducting business as well as the business values- integrity, community and service. Cathy served on many community foundations, boards and committees. She was most proud of her service to the St. Anthony School Board, where she served as Board President from 2009 to 2017.Mahalo to the Pacific Cancer Institute, the doctors and nursing staff at Maui Memorial Hospital, and Hospice Maui.She is survived by her husband, John D. Kim, three children Michael Francis (Kathryn), Ethan Joseph, and Kaitlin Elizabeth; and Grandson Dominic David Kawika Kim. Her brothers: Michael A. (Kimberly), David D. (Ione), James J. “Jay” (Wendy), and Robert A. Nobriga and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, 14th March. Public viewing 9:00 a.m., eulogies 12:00 p.m., with Mass to follow, at St. Anthony Catholic Church Center, Wailuku. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park. September 27, 1934 – February 25, 2020
Fidel Balag, 85, of ʻĪao Valley passed away on Feb. 25, 2020 at the Hospice Maui Hale. He was born on Sept. 27, 1934 to the late Elias Balag and Felicidad (Felisa) Carballida.
After attending BHS, Fidel joined the U.S. Army and served his country for 22 years. He then worked a short time at Sheraton Maui and finished his working career by retiring from the U.S. Postal Service after delivering mail for 23 years. He loved bowling, throwing horseshoes, spearing tako and his Las Vegas trips (he actually went often). He will be missed for his joking around and amateur magic tricks. He will always remain dear in our hearts.
Fidel was married to Patricia “Sista” Balag (predeceased) and together they had four children: Chris (Ema) Balag, Larry (Raynette) Balag, Tony Balag and Donna Carbonell; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Fidel is also survived by one brother, Leroy Balag, seven in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Ballard Family Mortuary on Sunday, March 8, 2020 with visitation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by services at 11:30 a.m. Burial will take place on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Makawao Veterans Cemetery.
The family would like to send a heartfelt special thanks to the nurses and aides at MMH-Maui South and also to the Hospice Maui Staff.
May 13, 1947 – February 26, 2020
Marilyn Jean Wilhelm, 72 of Makawao, Maui passed away on Feb. 26, 2020 at Maui Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 13, 1947 in Pāʻia, Maui to John and Margaret Nascimento. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2020 at St. Joseph Church in Makawao; service will begin at 11 a.m.; burial at 1 p.m. at Makawao Veteran’s Cemetery; luncheon to follow at Eddie Tam Community Center. Marilyn was a retired Educational Assistant from Wailuku and Pukalani Elementary.
She was predeceased by her husband Howard Wilhelm; survived by her sons Scott (Wendy), Shawn & Shane (Erica), her sister Patsy Tavares, her grandchildren, Jai, Shaya (Travis), Kyler, Shaylee & Shayden and her companion Ed Ferreira.
November 22, 1966 – February 27, 2020
Marivick B. Bugtong, 53 of Makawao, Maui passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020. She was born in Lānaʻi City, Lanai on Nov. 22, 1966.
She is survived by her mother, Marina Bugtong; father, Gaudencio (Francisca) Bugtong; sister, Prudencia “Prudy” Bugtong and Evelyn (Perry) Ugale. She was predeceased by brother, Menandro Bugtong.
For nearly 35 years, she has graced many people with her beautiful and infectious smile at the McDonalds drive thru of Wailuku town center.
The Bugtong family would like to express a heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Islands Hospice for their compassionate care of Marivick during her time here.
Services to be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Norman’s Mortuary. Visitation to begin at 9 a.m. with services to begin at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Maui Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m.
Filonima “Fely” “Naki” “Tutu Lady” Atay
February 8, 1932 – March 5, 2020
Filomina Atay, 88, of Kahului,Maui passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2020. She was born on Feb. 8, 1932.
Filomina was a devout Catholic from her hanabuddah days growing up in Paia and attending Holy Rosary Church. She gave much of her time by being active at Christ the King (CTK) church in Kahului. In 1992, she made her convenant with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, and was active with other ministries such as Choir, Hospitality and Bereavement. Together with her husband, Donny, they started the CTK Food Pantry in 1994 from a Matson container to feed Maui’s needy which is still serving the community from a portable office at Christ the King. As part of the divine Will Prayer Group, she visited many of the religious sites in Europe with the highlight being at the Vatican as the audience with the late Pope John II.
Filomina also answered to “Fely” or “Naki”; however, she was best known not only by her family, but to others that she included into her ‘Ohana as “TUTU LADY”. Tutu was the proud matriarch of the Atay ‘Ohana to her children: Don Atay, Donna Jones (Victor Regidor), Alika (Maile) Atay, Carlton “Boy” Atay, Denise Nishikawa and Cara (Russell) Burklin.
Tutu Lady is survived by her brothers, Alexander “Alex” Bantilan, William “Willie” Bantilan and sister Loretta “Nani” Ridela. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, Kamoi (Alyson) Atay-Cooper, Shura “Alex” (Patience) Nishikawa, Travis (Caroline) Atay, Jason (Amanda) Nishikawa, Hoala (Jessica) Atay, Keola (Lena) Nishikawa, Kehau (George) Akau, Mahie (Jen Fordyce) Atay, Kainoa (Courtney Chargin) Duarte, Shauntay (Keoni) Duey, Kapuaimilia Atay, Chad (Chelsea) Taylor, Uakea Atay, Kalei Atay, Moani Atay and Matahi Atay.
She also has 16 great-grandchildren, Connor, Alyssa, Casey, Phoenix, Kahoku, Lawai’a, Anuhea, Chloe, Lawakua, Puanani, Damien, Ellanikole, Ka’ipoleimanu, Ka’ieweakeola, Lilinoenani, Liloakahiwahiwa.
Tutu Lady was pre-deceased by her husband of 65 years, Donny Atay, her parents, Agapito Bantilan and Gaudencia Olpoc Bantilan, Sisters: Mary Camacho, Rosalind “Inday” Kalalau, Brothers: Bill, Victor, Martin Bantilan, hanai-daughter, Victoria Bantilan Taylor and grandson, Po’ohala Atay.
Tutu Lady was a 1950 graduate of Saint Anthony High School. Through her earlier years, she worked at Hana Hotel, Maui Palms Hotel, Budget Rent A Car, Sperry & Hanson Construction. She was a dedicated employee to Service Rentals & Supplies Inc. for over 47 years and was semi-retired. Although she was 88, Fely still went in to work twice a week.
On Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Christ the King Church there will be public visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with Mass at 11 a.m. Her ashes will be scattered at a later date.
