Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Hussey sent a letter on Wednesday to Gov. David Ige urging the adoption of additional policies to close critical gaps that remain even after the new federal moratorium on evictions and the state’s recent emergency proclamations and court orders, in an effort to ensure that all Hawaiʻi renters can stay in their homes and stay safe through the entire COVID-19 crisis.
Additionally, OHA is urging renters who have lost income and are having trouble making rent payments to reach out to their landlords and seek payment options that will allow for some relief during this time.
Landlords and mortgage holders who have lost or will lose income should reach out directly to their lenders to find out if their mortgage qualifies for the federal relief or other forms of relief that the lending institution may be able to offer.
