Permanent Checkpoints for Hāna, Maui; Running and Walking on Beach is NOT Permitted

Permanent Checkpoints for Hāna

  • Two “permanent” checkpoints will be established to make sure only residents are traveling to Hāna: (1) after Twin Falls and (2) past Kēōkea, according to information provided by the Mayor’s Office.
  • This will start on Saturday, April 18, 2020
  • Official placards will be available for residents, to streamline the checkpoint.  Residents can pick one up from: Hāna Store; Hasegawa General Store; Hāna Health; Hāna Police Station; Hāna Post Office; Hāna Council Services; Contacting Council Services Hana District Office at (808) 248-7513; or Visiting the ʻUlupalakua Ranch Office from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • *Also placards were delivered to remote communities in Kīpahulu, Kaupō, Kahikinui and ʻUlupalakua.

Feed My Sheep: Joyce Kawakami

    • Working with Salvation Army and others to ensure homeless get to stay in place and have food.
    • For 21 years Feed My Sheep has been delivering food to the impoverished on Maui giving them a weeks worth of food (21 meals for the week per person).
    • Last year alone, Feed My Sheep gave out more than 500,000 meals. “So you can imagine with the increase, we haven’t even got a clue where we’re going to go,” said Kawakami.
    • Distributions are weekly. Individuals get qualified through financial paperwork.
    • Four locations: Lahaina on Thursday 10 a.m. Roberts Parking lot across from Maria Lanakila Church; Happy Valley at the bottom of the hill next to Living Way Church on Fridays; Kahului on Puʻunēnē Avenue across from McDonald’s on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 pm.; in Kīhei Hope Chapel Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Hands on Maui offers volunteer opportunities.
    • Kawakami said the organization is in need of more food and finances.

Homeless Community

  • The County of Maui donated 300 masks and gloves to Ka Hale A Ke Ola to assist clients and their staff after one individual was confirmed to be COVID-19 positive and another is being tested. Both clients were removed from the Wailuku facility to an off-site quarantine location by the state Department of Health.

Hale Mahaolu: Grant Chun

  • The County of Maui donated 300 masks to Hale Mahaolu
  • Maui Food Bank monthly delivery of non-perishable food to seniors
  • Ocean Organic Vodka & Maui Babe providing hand sanitizer for all residents and staff at Hale Mahaolu (1200+)
  • Maui Face Mask Fund (Seabury Hall) provided 200 double filtered masks for Personal Care Program Aids and Meals Program meal deliverers and kitchen staff.
  • UHMC Fashion Tech Program provided fabric face masks for staff
  • County of Maui Office on Aging brought the Show Aloha Challenge to seniors throughout program. They’ll do another round of lunches starting on Monday for seniors at the facility.

29,000 Unemployed in Maui County; 243,000 Across the state

  • Mayor Victorino notes that the state and county went from one of the lowest unemployment rates to one of the highest in the nation.

Lānaʻi Update:

  • 100 bags of fresh produce purchased from local farmers were given to Lānaʻi residents in need
  • 100 additional bags of produce were delivered to Lānaʻi kupuna through the Meals on Wheels program.
  • Mayor Victorino gave a special thanks to Larry Ellison. According to the Mayor, Ellison has “taken care of the workers of Pulama O Lanai.  “Right now all of them are collecting their full pay and benefits until May 1, 2020,” said Mayor Victorino.  “He has also reduced or eliminated rent for all the business quad–the park area, Dole Park, that whole quadrant that goes right around it, that block–he is not collecting any rent this month, and is looking maybe next month to help again,” said Mayor Victorino.
  • Mahalo to: Riki Hokama; Denise Fernandez from the Lanai County Council District Office; Dave Embry and the farmers on Lānaʻi; and Kris Kahihikolo from the Lanai Senior Center
  • Well over 2,000 bags of food have been distributed to residents at events across Maui County

Clarification of Beach Rules from State

  • Today, the governor issued a supplemental proclamation issuing rules to enhance social distancing.
  • Many of the rules have already been in place in Maui County; however, state beach rules now match COUNTY beach rules.  You cannot sit, stand, lay down or lounge on the beach.
  • You can walk through the beach to the water for exercise purposes.
  • Governor’s office and Attorney General clarified today that people are NOT allowed to walk and run on the beach for exercise. This is stricter than Maui County’s rules.

Clarification of Face Mask Rules

  • Mayor Victorino said he is still strongly encouraging everyone to wear a cloth face covering or mask whenever they have to leave the house
  • The Governor announced today who must wear cloth face coverings: (1) all customers of essential businesses; and (2) All employees in essential businesses who have any contact with customers or goods for purchase.

Hāna Update:

  • 191 Tested at drive-through testing in Hāna
  • Mahalo to Hāna community, Dr. Chad Meyer and Dr. Scott Miscovich of Premiere Medical Group for helping to coordinate these testing events for residents.  The drive-through testing was provided at no-cost through a partnership with Dr. Scott Miscovich of Premier Medical Group, the County of Maui and volunteers.
