Fourth COVID-19 Related Death on Maui is Washington State Man With No Previous Medical Conditions

Maui has a fourth COVID-19 related death.  The case was included in today’s total count released by the state Department of Health this afternoon.

State health officials extended condolences to the family and friends of the adult male visitor who is the 10th death in Hawai‘i associated with COVID-19. “The individual was an adult male from Washington state in the 40-59-year age group who had no previous medical conditions and a history of travel,” according to a press release issued by the state’s COVID-19 Joint Information Center.  “Exposure history may be travel-related,” state officials said. The man had been hospitalized for an extended period in serious condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino released a statement on Sunday afternoon saying, “Joycelyn and I extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the patient and ask our Maui County ʻohana to provide support during this difficult time.  Every life lost in this pandemic is heartbreaking. I continue to ask everyone in Maui County and across our state to protect each other against the spread of this disease through social distancing and staying home for all but essential activities.”

As of noon on Sunday, April 19, 2020, there are 580 cases of COVID-19 identified in Hawaiʻi with 6 new cases. The total includes:

  • 3 new cases on Oʻahu for a total of 385 confirmed positive,
  • 2 new cases in Maui County for a total of 106 confirmed positive,
  • 1 new cases on Hawaiʻi Island for a total of 62 confirmed positive; and
  • 0 new cases on Kauaʻi for a total of 21 confirmed positive.

There are no pending cases, where the island of residency has not been determined, which remains unchanged from yesterday’s count.  There were also six cases that are identified as Hawaiʻi residents who were diagnosed outside of Hawaiʻi.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reports that there were 414 individuals released from isolation; and 52 cases that have required hospitalization.

Maui County has 2 new cases for a total of 106 confirmed positive. Of the 106 cases in Maui County, at least 54 have been released from isolation, and 7 have required hospitalization.

Maui County now has four COVID-19 related deaths. Maui reported its first COVID-19 related death on Monday, April 6, of an adult male over the age of 65 with underlying health conditions and exposure to travelers. The second Maui death was announced on Wednesday, April 8, and was an unattended death. A third death in Maui County reportedly occurred on April 7, but was reported in the state count on Friday, April 10. The third case involved an elderly individual who was in the chronic care unit.  The fourth case was included in today’s count and details are pending release.

There is a COVID-19 cluster on Maui at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.  The state adjusted the Maui Hospital cluster count upward to 45 individuals under investigation (up by three from previous counts), including 29 staff and 16 patients. The DOH’s investigation at MMMC continues and DOH officials say “it appears the outbreak may have been driven by a single healthcare worker who was allowed to work while ill.”

Two individuals from the Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center on Waiale Road in Wailuku on Maui have been moved to a Department of Health quarantine facility after one of them tested positive for COVID-19 and the other is awaiting test results.

There’s also two home health patients with Hale Makua Health Services and a nursing home resident from Hale Makua Kahului that tested positive for COVID-19.

There was also a confirmed case of a physical therapy worker at the Kula Hospital who tested positive for COVID-19.  A total of 16 individuals who received care were tested and so far, no positive cases have been reported as a result.

The Maui positive count includes at least one resident of the rural community of Hāna in East Maui and at least two residents of Molokaʻi.
