Congressman Neil Abercrombie visited Maui yesterday to officially announce his gubernatorial campaign bid to neighbor island supporters. The 10th-term congressman spoke to a crowd gathered at the canoe hale at Kanaha Beach detailing his campaign, which he says will focus on issues of economic recovery, energy independence and expanded quality education.

“During these challenging times, we need strong political leadership that will bring people together to create a far-reaching vision for Hawaii’s future,” he said.

As an Honorary Chairman of Hawaii’s Obama Campaign, Abercrombie said he is bringing the Obama message of hope and change to Hawaii. He added, “I saw how we could run a different kind of campaign that involved and inspired people and ultimately brought change to the Nation. Now, we must do the same for Hawaii.”

The Maui stop was the second in a series of kick off announcements being made across the state. The initial announcement was made at Abercrombie’s campaign headquarters on Oahu followed a video release to his supporters through his website, NeilAbercrombie.com that was also broadcast on YouTube.

Abercrombie’s 30 years in elective office includes experience as a Honolulu city council member, state representative and state senator, and U.S. congressman.

Instead of being a stepping stone, Abercrombie says, the office of Governor, “is the cornerstone for Hawaii’s future. I can leverage my experience and relationships in Washington D.C. and use them for Hawaii’s benefit,” said Abercrombie.

After the Maui stop, Abercrombie flew to Kauai yesterday to meet with supporters. Stops today include travel to Kona and Hilo before returning to Washington D.C. this evening.

The Kona Campaign Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at the Old Kona Airport Pavillion #4. The Hilo Campaign Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Waiakea High School Cafeteria.
