Five Hawai‘i Hālawa Inmate Deaths Classified as COVID-19 Related

The deaths of five male Hālawa Correctional Facility inmates in January are being classified by the Hawaiʻi Department of Health as COVID-19-related deaths. The deaths all occurred in individuals above the age of 65.

Officials with the Public Safety Department say no additional information is being provided to protect individual medical privacy.

The Hālawa facility on Oʻahu currently has three active positive inmate cases, two of which are in medical isolation at the facility and one that is hospitalized. There were 34 negative inmate result received today.

Here on Maui, the department is actively testing inmates at the Maui Community Correctional Center where a total of eight positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed.
