Bill Seeks to Honor Former President Obama with Historical Land Markers at Significant Hawai‘i Sites

A bill has been introduced seeking the placement of historical markers, honoring significant Hawai‘i sites in the life of former President Barack Obama.

SB 44 was introduced by Senator Stanley Chang (District 9 -Hawai‘i Kai, Kuli‘ou‘ou, Niu, ‘Āina Haina, Wai‘alae-Kahala and Diamond Head).

It would appropriate funds and require the Department of Land and Natural Resources to place the markers at nine locations identified in the bill including:

  • 6085 Kalanianaʻole Highway 
  • Baskin Robbins on King Street 
  • Island Snow Hawaiʻi 
  • Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children
  • Koko Crater Trail 
  • Noelani Elementary School 
  • Punahou Circle Apartments 
  • Punahou School 
  • Sandy Beach

“President Barack Obama has become a historical figure in our nation’s history and much of his success is credited to his upbringing here in Hawaiʻi,” said Senator Chang. “Placing these historical markers at significant sites special to President Obama is one way that we can honor his contributions and recognize him as a true son of Hawaiʻi.”
