Douglas Cabading
May 11, 1957 – Feb. 5, 2021
Douglas Kim Cabading, 63, of Kahului passed away on Feb. 5, 2021 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on May 11, 1957 in Wailuku.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 40 years, Victoria “Vicki” Maliikapu-Cabading; sons, Will (Tonya) Smith of TN, Avery (Kim) Maliikapu of Kahului, Cody (Amber) Cabading of Kahului, Bundy Cabading of Kahului; daughter, Demy Cabading of Kahului; grandchildren, Thomas, Senora, Madison and Trinity Smith of TN, Rydge and Braxton Maliikapu of Kahului, Keanu, Kekai, Keahi and Haley Ann Cabading of Kahului, Brilyn and Braiden Cabading of Kahului as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Bernaldo and Sarah Cabading.
Private services will be held at Ballard Family Mortuary. A celebration of life will be at his home 456 Kaʻao Circle in Kahului.
Matthew I. DeFrancia Sr.
Aug. 28, 1946 – Feb. 3, 2021
Matthew DeFrancia, Sr., 74, of Wailuku, Maui, passed away at his home, surrounded by his ʻohana on Feb. 3, 2021, under the care of Hospice Maui. He was born on Aug. 28, 1946, in Honolulu.
DeFrancia retired from the County of Maui, Highways Division. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa DeFrancia. He is survived by his sons, Jason (Jovena) DeFrancia, Andrew (Annette) Diaz, Matthew (Shiara) DeFrancia Jr., Kevin (Elayna) DeFrancia, Kyle (Rashawyn) DeFrancia, Malcolm (Samantha) DeFrancia; daughter, Ainahau (Stacey) Akima; grandchildren, Chasity, Kalei, Shalei, Bryson, Haylee Ann, Kolby, Tyler, Anuhea, Chance, Kross, Abcde, Kyeana-Faye, Jhastinee, Destine, Javen, Jacob, Shaeyla, River-Marissa, Joshua; great grandchildren, AJ, Ayla, Azen, Kailea, Kala’i, Tzylus, Tzarieus, Akai, Lily, Kama, Hiapo, Joshua, Jonah; brothers, Lawrence De Francia, Eugene De Francia; and sister Judy Smith.
Drive-through visitation was held Feb. 12-13, 2021.
Thomas “Toby” Ernest Fernandez
June 16, 1936 – Feb. 3, 2021
Thomas “Toby” E. Fernandez Sr., 84 of Wailuku, peacefully passed away on Feb. 3, 2021. He was born on June, 1936 in Upcountry Maui to Louis Nance and Rebecca Fernandez.
Toby, also known as “Pops,” was employed by the US Postal Service for 35 years. He also was a member of the Hawai’i National Guard.
He was known as the “Mayor of Wailuku” (if you know you know). Fernandez was an avid softball player, golfer, bowler and pool hustler. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was pre-deceased by his lovely wife Deanna Pali Fernandez and survived by his caring companion Janet Fernandez; sisters Judy (Stanley) Akoi of Hana and Clara (Donald) Panela of Wailuku; children Minei (Graylen) Strahan, Thomas Jr. (Cyndi) Fernandez, Hoku Kihune, Kimmy (Frank) Rodrigues, Randy (Sharon) Fernandez, Wenceslaus (Tina) Jarnesky, Joey (Chelsea) Fernandez; 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Due to COVID-19, a private service and burial will be held. There will be a public drive-thru viewing at Ballard’s Mortuary on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
On behalf of Fernandez’ ohana, we would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, gifts and outpouring love and support. We would also like to thank the many care givers and nurses at Maui Memorial Hospital. Mahalo nui loa! Rest in love pops, a hui hou.

Lori Joyce Fong
Dec. 10, 1931 – Feb. 2, 2021
Lori Joyce Fong, 89, of Kahului, Maui, passed peacefully at her home, under the care of Islands Hospice, with her family at her side on Feb. 2, 2021. She was born on Dec. 10, 1931 on Maui.
Private family services will be held, followed by burial at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.
Fong graduated from St. Anthony high school in 1949 and retired from Kahului Library as a library technician. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, reading and most of all spending time with her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward K.S. Fong, Sr.; and daughter, Eileen (Ferreira) Perry. She is survived by her son, Edward K.S. Fong, Jr. (Leimomi Wong); daughter, Lisa Garcia (Alfred Jr.); son-in-law, Scott Perry; and grandchildren, Eric, Kamryn, Madison, Rylee, Sasha, Ekahi and Alia.
Joseph Serrao
Sept. 2, 1934 – Feb. 1, 2021
Joseph G. “Buddy” Serrao, 86, of Makawao, passed away on Feb. 1, 2021 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 2, 1934 in Hilo, HI.
Joseph was a police captain with the Maui Police Department. He retired in 1985 after 25 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine F. Serrao; children, Sonja Madrigal, Aaron (Heidi) Serrao, and Claire (James) Schissler; 5 grandchildren, Ashley Madrigal, Ashley Tavares Paris, Sean (Mia Bethell) Serrao, Stephen Schissler and Mary Schissler; 3 great-grandchildren, Kaelyn Madrigal-Greer, Van Freitas and Aria De Lima; brothers, Donald and Robert Serrao; and sister, Dorothy Nagasako. Joseph is also survived by his multiple nieces and nephews.

Judy Jane McAvoy
Feb. 9, 1971 – Feb. 1, 2021
Judy Jane McAvoy 49, of Kihei, Maui passed peacefully on Feb. 1, 2021 at Kahului Hale Makua. She was born on Feb. 9, 1971 in Wailuku, Maui.
Judy is survived by her sister Gail (Kawika) Pimentel; sons Kawika (Adriana) Pimentel & Keali’i (Ashley) Pimentel; daughter Shanyce (Scottie) McAvoy; nephew/god-son Devin Balberdi; and grandchildren Alyx Foster, Taelah Pimentel-Foster, Nahinu Pimentel, Kaua Pimentel, Kunae Pimentel and Azaela Pimentel.
She is pre-deceased by her parents Federick and Yolanda Pimentel; and brother Curtis Pimentel.
McAvoy was a loving mother of 3. She was always such a sweetheart to everyone. She loved to go fishing and camping. She also loved playing cards and doing puzzles and crafts.

Leroy Dejesus
May 10, 1948 – Feb. 10, 2021
Leror “Bubba” Haimi Dejesus, 73 of Honokaʻa HI, died on Feb. 10, 2021 at Hilo Medical Center.
Dejesus was born in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. He was a retired truck driver for the Hamakua Plantation and a US veteran.

Leroy is survived by his brother, Richard (Theresa) Dejesus of Manteca, CA; sister, Dorothy Dejesus of Mesa, AZ; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
