Weekend Round-Up: Lahaina Friday, I Keia Manawa, Poetry Slam

LAHAINA SECOND FRIDAY TOWN PARTY/VETERAN’S DAY Friday, November 11 (11/11/11). Several events and locations providing free activities and entertainment near Front St.
This week Lahaina will host the second official Maui Friday Town Party of the month. The event will also be a celebration for Veteran’s Day, and Front Street will be decorated with alternating US and Hawaiian flags to commemorate our veterans.
Willie K. will perform at Kimo’s starting at 9 p.m. with no cover charge. Willie will also be handing out free slices of Hula Pie to those who arrive earliest.
Some participating Lahaina restaurants will offer 10-20% discounts from 4-8 p.m. This is a good way to get free parking for the evening (restaurant validation).
The Baldwin Home Museum will celebrate Lahaina Second Friday by offering free candlelit tours of the historic Baldwin Home from 6-8:30 p.m.
The Village Gallery will host a gala reception for “Eleven, Eleven, Eleven,” a show featuring 11 multi-medium artists. The Gallery is located at 120 Dickenson Street behind the Baldwin House Museum and the reception will be held from 6-9 p.m.
Lahaina Printsellers will host a New Zealand Art and wine tasting event for Lahaina Second Friday. New Zealand artist Simon Williams will show his collection of Maui oil paintings paired with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and an array of pupus including white truffle popcorn, pepper berry caramelized macadamias, and Sauvignon Blanc poached prawns with Maui avocado mousse and Hawaiian sea salt. MEET THE ARTISTS OF I KEIA MANAWA (IN THIS TIME) ART EXHIBIT OPENING Saturday, November 12. Starts at 5:30 p.m. in the MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery. Free.
Four Hawaiian women artists have gathered to create “I Keia Manawa (In This Time),” a multi-media investigation into “social issues of historical relevance with Hawaiian cultural, environmental, and political ideas.”
The works featured by artists Maile Andrade, Kalili Chun, April Drexel and Kapulani Landgraf will include mixed media in the form of fiber, glass, painting, photography and instillation-based work.
The exhibit makes its debut this weekend, where all four artists will be present to meet with the public.
“WORD BECOMES FLESH” POETRY SLAM Sunday, November 13. Starts 7:30 p.m. at the MACC. Tickets are $12,$28 and $38.
National Poetry Slam champion Marc Bamuthi Joseph presents “Word Becomes Flesh,” a show blending spoken word with hip hop music and dance.
