Results from the 2024 Hawaiʻi General Election are being posed here as they become available, with a focus on races impacting Maui County.
At 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, the state Office of Elections released a third summary report for Maui County, resulting in revised totals for some Maui races. In the South Maui Council race, Tom Cook has 26,315 votes (41.6%), ahead of Kelly Takaya King who has 26,198 votes (41.4%) following the third county printout. That narrows the gap to just 117 votes between the two. All other Maui council incumbents and Maui incumbents seeking reelection to the state House and Senate were well ahead of their opponents in respective races after the third printout.
Maui and Kauaʻi counties released third reports shortly after 6 a.m. Honolulu’s third summary report was released just before 8:30 a.m, and Hawaiʻi County completed its third summary report at 10:48 a.m. At 12:23 p.m., a fourth summary report was issued for Kauaʻi County. The updated results are not yet reflected in the latest statewide summary report.
The third Maui printout also changed the voter turnout numbers for Maui County. Total voter registration in Maui County was 115,009, with total turnout tallied at 63,275 voters or 55%—including 57,415 mail-in votes and 5,860 in-person votes. Thatʻs well ahead of the 25% in the primary, but down from the 66% turnout in the last presidential election in 2020. The image below shows the latest Maui specific results as of 6:10 a.m. on Nov. 6. The finalized statewide printout is pending release by the state Office of Elections.

In one of the closest council races, South Maui Council Member Tom Cook has 20,511 votes (42.3%), ahead of challenger Kelly King who has 19,755 votes (40.8%) in the second printout. All Maui incumbents seeking reelection to the state House and Senate continue to lead in their respective races after the second printout.
On the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, Kimo Alameda garnered 35,577 votes (51.2%), ahead of incumbent Mayor Mitch Roth who earned 30,717 votes (44.2%) after the second printout. Local media outlets declared a victory for Alameda after the first printout. One of the closest races is that of State Sen. Brenton Awa (R) of District 23 on Oʻahu, who was just eight votes ahead of challenger Ben Shafer (D) in the initial results. After the second printout, Awa widened his lead with 9001 votes (48.6%) compared to 8699 votes (8699) obtained by his opponent.
Total voter registration in Maui County was 115,009, with total turnout tallied at 48,486 voters or 42.2%—including 42,626 mail-in votes and 5,860 in-person votes.
Maui Now continues to update results as they become available. The results listed below show tallies solely from the state of Hawaiʻi. Fox and ABC both have projected Trump as the next president, as other outlets awaited further tallies of electoral votes overnight. Early this morning, the AP also joined in calling the presidential race in favor of Trump, who becomes the 47th president of the United States.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD
In one of the closest council races, South Maui Council Member Tom Cook has 20,511 votes (42.3%), ahead of challenger, Kelly King who has 19,755 votes (40.8%) in the first printout. All Maui incumbents seeking reelection to the state House and Senate are leading in their respective races.
On the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, Kimo Alameda garnered 35,577 votes (51.2%), ahead of incumbent Mayor Mitch Roth who earned 30,717 votes (44.2%) after the first printout. One of the closest races is that of State Sen. Brenton Awa (R) of District 23 on Oʻahu, who has 8488 votes, just eight votes ahead of challenger Ben Shafer (D) who has 8480 votes in the initial results.
Fox and ABC both have projected Trump as the next president, as other outlets await further tallies of electoral votes.

At mid-day, lines at voter service centers on Maui were long. Voters reported waiting for more than two and a half hours at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku before casting their ballots on Tuesday afternoon. Some residents came from as far away as Hāna to cast their ballot in person at the Wailuku facility. There were also long lines reported earlier today at the Lahaina Civic Center which was also open for in person voting on Maui.
Lines were even longer on Oʻahu where wait times were between three to four hours and up to six hours at some locations. With hundreds of people in line at some locations before the 7 p.m. cutoff time, it is expected to be hours before all eligible remaining votes are processed.
The first printout is expected after all voter service centers are confirmed to be closed. Lines at the voter service centers are impacting the release of the first set of results. Subsequent results will be released as further tallies are received. A final summary report will be released after all counties have verified results.
As of around 10:30 p.m., Maui voting appeared to have concluded in Wailuku on Maui. Voters were still reported to be in line casting ballots at Kapolei Hale on Oʻahu at last report.
Maui Now will update the results when they become available.
