New Two Level Police Station Planned for Kihei in South Maui

The county has filed a Draft Environmental Assessment for a planned police station in Kihei. The proposed station is planned for construction on 10 acres of land mauka of the Piilani Highway near Kamalii Elementary School.

The current station is located in a small 2,400 square foot space in the Kihei Town Center. County officials say much of the department’s operations are incompatible with the surrounding commercial shopping center use, and space at the existing facility is inadequate to accommodate the 33 police personnel assigned to the district.

The proposed new two-story station has been designed to accommodate the functional aspects of the district, including office, meeting, and training areas, holding cells, and record storage. The projected floor area of the new building would be nearly 47,000 square feet-nearly 20 times larger than the existing facility.

The new station would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Related improvements include site grading, landscaping, installation of underground utilities, roadway access and vehicle parking.

The development of the Kihei Police Station is pending receipt of regulatory and construction permits and approvals. According to the DEA report prepared by Munekiyo & Hiraga, Inc., the projected completion of site construction is in December of 2010 at an estimated cost of $40 million.

The new parcel is proposed for location on land currently owned by the County of Maui and Haleakala Ranch Company. Access to the site would be provided from Kanani Road via the Piilani Highway.
