A sizeable earthquake was recorded on the Big Island of Hawaii this afternoon.  The US Geological Survey estimated the time of the quake at 12:45 p.m. and gave the tremor a preliminary magnitude of 5.1.  The quake was centered 9 miles SSE of Volcano.  The National Weather Service identified the specific area as the Hilina region of Kilauea and had a slightly lower magnitude recording of 5.0.  The quake did not generate a tsunami, however some areas experienced strong shaking.
