County opens temporary service sites in West, Central Maui due to Hurricane Lowell coastal flooding

The County of Maui opened two temporary service sites at 8 a.m., Sept. 8, 2026, in West Maui and in Central Maui for anyone impacted by Hurricane Lowell road closures due to coastal flooding.

High tides, hurricane-force waves and coastal flooding are anticipated to continue today; a National Weather Service Flood Watch for Hurricane Lowell is in effect for all Hawaiian Islands through this afternoon.

Temporary service sites are located at:

• WEST MAUI: Lahaina Civic Center, 1840 Honoapiʻilani Highway, Lahaina
• CENTRAL MAUI: Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, 395 Waena St., Wailuku

Temporary service sites are facilities intended to support residents during an event such as PSPS, prolonged road closure or prolonged power outage. They are equipped with charging stations for personal electronic devices. Residents must bring their own food, drinking water, medications, charging cables and other essential items. Pets are allowed if they are in crates. If overnight sheltering becomes necessary, the sites may transition to emergency shelters.

Multiple State and County coastal roads are closed due to flooding and debris from Hurricane Lowell storm surge. Motorists should avoid affected areas, use alternate routes and allow additional travel time. Do not drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roads. Road closures may change as crews assess conditions and clear debris.

Road closures as of 8 a.m. today are (status subject to change):

• WEST MAUI: (Update: 9:39 a.m, 9.8.26) Road into Lahiana from Kahakuloa is closed and is only available for local traffic.
• WEST MAUI: (Update: 8:57 a.m., 9.8.26) Both lanes are now open on Honoapiʻilani Highway between Lone Pine and Māʻalaea. Continue to drive with caution. A lane shift is in effect at MM 12.5

• SOUTH MAUI: South Kīhei Road between North Kīhei Road and Ohukai Road.
• SOUTH MAUI: (Update: 1:24 p.m., 9.8.26) North Kīhei Road between Honoapiʻilani Highway and South Kīhei Road. is now open in both directions.
