UPDATE: Investigation Continues into Fatal Maui Shooting

An investigation continues, the day after a deadly shooting on Maui.

The deceased has since been identified as 31-year-old Marshall M.K. Langford of Wailuku.

Last night, county officials also confirmed that a second suspect involved in the incident turned himself in to Maui police.

The 28-year-old suspect in the Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle incident, and the subject of a police department’s search, turned himself in to police at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police described the second suspect as a 28 year old male from Wailuku. He is presently being held at the Wailuku Police Station as the investigation continues.

The suspect currently in custody has not been charged, according to police. The MPD has 48 hours to charge him with anything, so technically they have until tomorrow, according to authorities.

Authorities say Langford, who was shot in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui Resort, suffered fatal injuries in the incident.

Officers had responded to the scene for a report of a stolen vehicle parked at the location.

The 2010 blue Chevy Impala four-door sedan was reported stolen on Saturday, and was last seen a week earlier on May 7, at the Alamo car rental baseyard near the Kahului Airport.

When officers arrived, authorities say they found Langford in the vehicle. Police say the suspect attempted to flee the scene, and while doing so, allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at an officer. The officer responded, police say, by firing his weapon.

When asked if a weapon had been recovered, police this afternoon said that remains under investigation.

According to MPD acting PIO Officer Tanya Dods, the recovery of a weapon remains under investigation. Acting Capt. Peter Delima, said police are still executing a warrant to get into the vehicle used in the incident.

The police officer involved in the shooting is an 18-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, assigned to Kihei Patrol. County officials say he is on administrative leave pending an investigation as part of standard procedure.

Langford had 18 prior convictions according to the state’s criminal justice center records.

The list includes felony convictions in 2006 for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.  The case resulted in a five year prison sentence, handed down in November of that year.

In September of 2005, there were records of convictions against Langford for promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, and theft.

The investigation into Tuesday’s fatal shooting is ongoing.
