Weekend Round-Up: Kenny Loggins, Upcountry Ag Fair, Republik Reggae

Not many can think of music in the early 80s without remembering platinum artist Kenny Loggins.
His smash hit singles that still ring in the ears of fans across the globe including “Footloose,” “I’m Alright,” and “Danger Zone.”
Loggins is currently on a North American tour celebrating his extensive career, and he’s only making one stop in the Aloha State on Friday night at the MACC.

Major reggae groups Steel Pulse and Slightly Stoopid headline the second-annual Republik Music Festival which also features performances from popular acts Alborosie, G. Love, and Gyptian.

The the common thread in this year’s Republik Music Festival performers of course is that they all incorporate varying hints of reggae style – but all of them also share the trait of bringing in other genres that spice up their sound and make each band that more unique.

Upcountry Agriculture and Farm Fair Saturday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oskie Rice Field Arena in Makawao.
Grab a hat and cowboy boots and head upcountry Saturday for a fair that promotes youth interest in agriculture, ranching, and animal husbandry.
The fair features an Ohana Ranch Rodeo, a 4-H livestock auction, and local farm tents selling plants and produce.

John Cruz Live Friday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at Stella Blues in Kihei. Tickets are $60 for dinner (6 p.m.) and the show, and $30 for the show alone.
John Cruz gives a solo performance in the Stella Blues Supper Club series, sharing his original, home-grown Hawaiian sound.
Cruz holds the title for winning the first-ever Grammy awarded for Hawaiian music with his song “Jo Bo’s Night.”
He continues to dazzle fans worldwide, and has played alongside other Hawaii-based greats Jack Johnson, Paula Fuga, and Makana.
Lahaina Second Friday Town Party Friday, June 8 from 6-9 p.m. on Front Street in Lahaina. A free family event.

School is out for most students and summer has officially begun, so this Lahaina Second Friday Town Party has a lot planned in celebration including music, grand openings, food specials, and art deals at local galleries.
Highlights include a concert in the park presented by Lahaina Town Action Committee featuring three Maui performers, a free Nuff Sedd concert at Kimo’s, and the grand opening of Lahaina’s brand-new Hula Rock Awa Bar.
Also, Maui girl and previous American Idol contestant Camile Velasco plays at Hard Rock Cafe at 7:30 p.m.

A Kettle Prime (AKP) Reunion Show Saturday, June 9 at 9 p.m. at Diamond’s Ice Bar & Grill in Kihei. No cover.
Long-lost Maui roots band A Kettle Prime returns from their solo musical journeys for a reunion show while lead singer Lake McLain is in town.
The rock-funk-blues band took the Maui music scene in 2007 with their signature sound, and many who remember the band are excited to see them rejoin for one special night.
Night of Shooting Stars Saturday, June 9 at 5 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center. Entrance is $10 in advance and $15 at the door (keiki 6 and under get in free).
Basketball Maui hosts a night of fun on the court where kids can play against local celebrities Mayor Alan Arakawa, former Hawaii Lieutenant Governor James “Duke” Aiona, pro surfer Ian Walsh, and Butterfly Effect founder Tatiana Howard.
All proceeds benefit Basketball Maui, an organization whose mission is to teach Maui youth character building and life skills through basketball.

Finally – another reggae show. Honolulu band JahMaka comes to Maui to play songs from their new album, “Appetite for Love.” Be sure to bring an appetite for roots reggae, jah.

13th Annual Taiko Festival with Zenshin Daiko Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at the MACC. Tickets are $10 for keiki and $20 for adults.
Maui’s Japanese taiko group Zenshin Daiko presents an exciting and culturally rich festival including koto arrangements by Na Hoku Hanohano nominated musicians Kimo and Jody Hybrechts.
The concert also features Toru Watanabe and Portland Taiko’s Michelle Fujii, who will perform an innovative fusion of taiko and Japanese folk dance.
