Two New Cardiologists Join Maui Memorial

Maui Memorial Medical Center today announced the addition of two new cardiologists to the hospital’s Maui Heart & Vascular program.

Dr. Tracy Dorheim and Dr. Kimble Poon join the staff of the only hospital outside of Oahu to provide a full range of cardiac services, including open-heart surgery and angioplasty.

The MMMC heart program officially launched on August 15, 2011, creating an option for Maui patients to be treated on island, without having to travel to O’ahu for care.

The new healthcare treatment program targets acute and emergent problems in heart disease, specifically heart attacks.

Dr. Dorheim is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and board-certified with the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Dr. Dorheim performed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Oklahoma and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Poon, meantime, is a Cardiologist specializing in Electrophysiology.

He is a Harvard graduate who earned his medical degree from Cornell University; and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at UCLA Medical Center.  Dr. Poon also completed his General Cardiology Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA; and Electrophysiology Fellowship at Kaiser-LAMC.

Officials at MMMC say he brings to Maui a unique skill set of advanced ablations and device therapy, allowing the hospital to offer services that were previously available only in Honolulu.
