Body of Bicyclist Recovered From Waihee Cliff

A visitor suffered fatal injuries in a bicycle accident near the 8 Mile Marker of the Kahekili Highway on Maui on Friday afternoon.

Rescue crews responded to a report of a bicyclist that went off the side of the road and down a cliff in Waihee at around 2:51 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4.

Rescue personnel from the Maui Fire Department rappelled down approximately 125-feet to the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Crews from the department’s Air-1 helicopter airlifted the body from the bottom of the cliff to a secured landing zone.

The victim was a 29-year-old female from Amsterdam, Netherlands, said Mainaga.

Other crews responding to the scene included included Engine-1 from Wailuku, Rescue-10 from Kahului, and Battalion Chief 4.

The incident is being investigated by personnel with the Maui Police Department.
