Maui County Councilmember Tamara Paltin is asking University of Hawaiʻi President David Lassner to put a hold on moving forward with the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope planned for the summit of Maunakea.

Fire officials reported responding to numerous calls of “smokers,” many in the middle of the burn areas, which fire officials said are of a lower priority than those near the edges, or perimeter, of burned areas. The fire may smolder for a week, fire officials said.

Opponents of the Thirty Meter Telescope project atop Maunakea have set up camp at the base of Maunakea Access Road ahead of construction, which was allowed to proceed on Monday.

Maui police are looking for a possibly maroon-colored Ford dually-type truck, early to mid-2000’s model with truck racks. Police are interested in identifying this vehicle as well as the owner as it was seen leaving the area of the Hoʻokele Street fire today.

Fire crews are battling a new fire reported at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019 in an area of brush near the new Hookele Safeway location behind Lowe’s and Target.

Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation on Friday, declaring the County of Maui a disaster area. The proclamation enables the state to provide quick and efficient relief from damages, losses, suffering caused by the disaster, and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people.

Due to damage to the electrical grid caused by the brush fire, Maui Electric is asking Maui customers to assist by conserving electricity use especially between 5 and 9 p.m.

Mahalo to all who sent photos and video from the Maui wildfire.  Below is a slideshow of the fire from around the island.  The fire burned an estimated 10,000 acres, forced evacuation of thousands in North Kihei and Maalaea, resulted in road closures and power outages as well as travel impacts at Kahului Airport.

Maui fire crews are responding to a brush fire reported in the area of East Waikō Road and Kūihelani Highway. The incident was reported at around 10:48 a.m.
