The first humpback whale of the season was spotted by researchers aboard the NOAA ship Hiʻialakai off of Niʻihau last week, marking an early start to the whale season in Hawaiʻi. The sighting was reported on Tuesday, Sept. 29, as the crew traveled home from a mission at the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Council to Consider Resolutions on Water, Smoking in Vehicles, Minimum Wage
The Maui County council will consider resolutions to approve for inclusion in the 2016 Hawaiʻi State Association of Counties Legislative Package bills that: (1) prohibit smoking in motor vehicles occupied by minors; (2) increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2019; and (3) allow persons with disabilities to indicate on their identification cards their disability.
