It’s been more than week since 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi of Maui went missing during a layover at Los Angeles International Airport. She was on her way New York City to visit family, but missed her connecting flight at LAX that was scheduled to depart at 11 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2024.

$89M in grants expected to boost broadband, digital equity for Hawaiian home lands

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has been awarded a $72 million grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program, adding to a $17 million grant received earlier this year. This brings the total to $89 million to improve broadband access for thousands of underserved households on Hawaiian home lands.

Avian Influenza confirmed in backyard flock of birds in Central Oʻahu

The state Department of Agriculture received confirmation that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected in a backyard flock of various birds in Central O‘ahu. The property involved is within the area served by the Wahiawā Wastewater Treatment Plant, where a recent detection was reported. This is the first confirmed detection of the virus in Hawai‘i.

A brush fire in Māʻalaea burned an estimated 95 acres since it was first reported at 12:37 p.m. on Thursday, near the intersection of Honoapiʻilani Highway and Kūihelani Highway, fire officials said.

After the devastating Lahaina fire swept through the town last year, one of Maui’s voyaging canoes was floating offshore—the 62 foot, 12 ton Moʻokiha o Piʻilani. She was in waters fronting 525 Front St., outside of Kamehameha Iki Park where she was built. Hui O Waʻa Kaulua is celebrating Moʻokiha O Piʻilani’s 10th birthday Nov 23, 2024 at the Seascape Restaurant in Māʻalaea.

Expect traffic delays with night hauling of Kilohana temporary modular homes

Hawaiian Electric monitoring wildfire risk conditions

Hawaiian Electric is continuing to monitor weather conditions across the leeward areas of the islands in light of the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning for Friday, Nov. 15. If necessary, Hawaiian Electric may implement its Public Safety Power Shutoff program within the next 24 hours and proactively shut off power in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk, company officials said on Thursday. Customers in these areas are urged to review their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages.
