Hawai’i Food & Wine Festival’s Moscow Mule Maui Style event in Kāʻanapali let 100 rookie cocktail-makers compete for creative honors, as they learned about a cocktail that turned three failures into long-lasting success.

Maui resident Shep Gordon, known for his years as a Hollywood agent to the stars, was the special honoree at a signature event of the Hawaiʻi Food and Wine Festival held over the weekend at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa.

The second-annual Keokea Ho‘olaule‘a unfolds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 5 at the Keokea Marketplace, featuring four dozen vendors and plenty of food.

Peter Merriman is known as the “original locavore.” In 1985, he and local producers helped spur the farm-to-table movement in Hawai’i. Thirty years later, Merriman’s restaurants remain true to his mission statement, “Do the Right Thing.”

Ann Roberts has been promoted to the new position of Food & Beverage Operations Manager at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has promoted Sharon Soriano to Manager of Restaurants and Bars. Soriano has been with the Sheraton Maui since 2012, serving as hosthelp, cashier, waithelp and fountain dispenser.

Chef Lyndon Honda of Laulima Events won with his Puerto Rican Pork Patty Mofongo, a plantain dish that featured the locally-made rum as the distinctive ingredient, and included chorizo black beans, cotija cheese and chicharrones. As for the cocktail category, winner Gabe Harvey of Kīhei mixed up a drink called Maikaʻi.
