Maui Humane Society’s Wags to Riches fundraising event, April 29

Maui Humane Society hosts its annual “Wags to Riches” VIP fundraising event on April 29, 2023. Shelter animals will be sent from the doghouse to the penthouse. The top fundraisers will earn a VIP night with a shelter dog at several of Hawaiʻi’s top-rated luxury beachfront resorts.

Critical habitat proposed for 12 endangered species, all on Hawai’i Island

Approximately 122,277 acres of federal, state, private, and public lands are being proposed as critical habitat for 12 species, all found only on Hawaiʻi island.

33 swimmers accused of “aggressively pursuing” a dolphin pod on Hawaiʻi Island

A group of 33 swimmers were met by uniformed officers after they were caught on drone video and in photographs allegedly harassing a pod of dolphins at Hōnaunau Bay Sunday morning off Hawaiʻi Island.

Phase 1 excavation complete at Haleakalā following 700 gallon fuel spill

Workers removed approximately 43 sacks of soil estimated at 84,000 pounds, replacing it with soil gathered at a nearby site. The soil removed is being safely stored at the summit of Haleakalā until a remediation plan is approved in Phase 3.

Volcano Watch: Pele’s hair – a beautiful hazard on Hawaiʻi Island

Shiny and elusive, featherlight and golden-brown. If poets were to write about rocks, I’m sure they would sing their praises of Pele’s hair. Don’t be fooled, though, because Pele’s hairs are strands of volcanic glass, and they can pose a serious hazard.

Sanctuary Ocean Count and Great Whale Count conclude for 2023 season

The total number for the Great Whale Count on Maui was 313, for a grand total of 1,121 throughout the state.

Haleakalā NP to move forward with plan to use mosquitoes to reduce the transmission of avian malaria in forest birds

The NPS will use an incompatible insect technique (IIT) which consists of repeatedly releasing incompatible male mosquitoes into the wild to reduce the reproductive potential of female mosquitoes in the project area. 

Gov. Green announces Kūlanihāko‘i High opening agreement

The State and Maui County have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement in which the Department of Education will receive a temporary certificate of occupancy in exchange for the State temporarily agreeing to indemnify the County against theoretical future claims of liability.

Polynesian Voyaging Society launches a four-year Moananuiākea Voyage

The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced that it will launch a planned circumnavigation of the Pacific upon arrival in Juneau, Alaska on June 10, 2023.  PVS spent five years planning for the Moananuiākea Voyage, which will take four years to complete. 

Mayor Richard Bissen, Jr. identifies priorities in his first State of the County Address

In his address, Mayor Bissen described work by his administration in priority areas of housing, water, infrastructure, economic development, and environment. He also discussed work to find a resolution surrounding the opening of the long-awaited Kūlanihākoʻi High School in South Maui.

Founder of Peʻahi Big Wave contest retires, looks back at Maui surfing pioneers

Rodney Lash Nui Kilborn was a firefighter on Maui and had sponsored a number of amateur surfing events as a volunteer organizer on the Valley Isle, when he led a number of other watermen to help to start the first annual Peʻahi surfing contest in the mid-1990s. Old Maui Palms Hotel site in Kahului will be new 136-room Hampton Inn and Suites

After several ownership changes, the old Maui Palms Hotel site between Maui Beach and Maui Seaside hotels in Kahului is under construction to become Maui Palms Hampton Inn and Suites by Hilton.

Today marks day 100 of Governor Josh Green, M.D.’s administration. Gov. Green became Hawaiʻi’s ninth governor on Dec. 5, 2022.

Chopped Champion! Chef McKenna Shea of Maui wins with Abalone on Food Network

Maui Chef McKenna Shea of Pacificʻo on the Beach was crowned the champion of Food Network’s Chopped Tuesday night.  She won the episode entitled “A Bunch of Abalone!” and took home the $10,000 top prize.

Maui hotels and restaurants dominate USA Today’s 10 Best lists

Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa was named the Best Hotel in Hawaiʻi by USA TODAY in the publications 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.  The resort was selected for its “plush ocean view rooms, lagoon-style pool” and location at Kāʻanapali Beach.

PARK MAUI to hold Lahaina open house, March 25

Subject to Maui County Council approval, the pilot phase is designed to allow Maui County residents who register to receive free parking at Maui parks and beaches at all times, as well as one to two hours of free or discounted parking in small towns. Under the proposal, non-Maui County residents would have the option to pre-purchase weekly or discounted monthly beach parking passes.
