The first annual event over the Halloween weekend will take place at various venues around Lahaina, seemingly in the same vein as the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Maui Memorial Medical Center identified 18 young artists as winners in the 2014 Student Art Contest. The selected artwork is now on display in the hospital’s hallway adjacent to the Café.

While there is no Maui show on the schedule to date, Hawaiʻi fans from across the state will have first dibs on claiming concert tickets.

A “Go For Broke” exhibit, chronicling the history of Japanese American soldiers from the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service who served during World War II, opens on May 1st at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Wailuku.

Complete results… The men of Ka Leo O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka Lā, under the direction of kumu hula Kaleo Trinidad, finished on top with a total of 1,194 points, winning: the Lokalia Montgomery perpetual trophy for the best overall performance; 1st place in the Overall Kāne division; 1st place in the Kāne ʻAuana division; and 2nd place in the Kāne Kahiko division.

The Merrie MThe Merrie Monarch Hula Festival continues at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, with two hālau from Maui competing in the final round of competition tonight (Saturday, April 26), with ʻauana, or modern hula selections.

The week-long 51st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island continues with kahiko or ancient style hula performances tonight. The competition portion of the festival got underway on Thursday night with the crowning of the new Miss Aloha Hula for 2014.

The two Maui contenders include: Hulali Kaʻimiʻāina Ciera De Lima of Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka and Kamalani Kaleimomi Ka-hale-poli Kawaʻa of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi.

The winning entry was for their rendition of Ka Huliau ʻAna, composed by Palani Vaughn, arranged by Kamuela Fong, and led by student director, Madison Vaught.

The family-friendly event is open to kids and their parents, and features “hours of fun, active play, and educational opportunities,” including a first-of-its-kind Kid’s Triathlon open to kids ages 5 to 12, a 5K, and a Fun Run.

The event takes place on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. in the HP Baldwin Auditorium. It is free and open to the public and features more than 29 student musicians in grades 2 to 12, on strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College hosts a week-long series of free events in celebration of music from Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, 2014.

Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, the half-sister of President Barack Obama and international studies educator, has been identified as a presenter at the 2014 TEDxMaui event. The partial list also includes: Dave Kalama; Kerrie Urosevich, PhD; Kimi Werner; and Samuel ‘Ohukani‘ōhi‘a Gon, III, PhD.
