Maui’s lone hālau entry in the Merrie Monarch Festival over the weekend earned several awards at the 49th annual event.

The title of Miss Aloha Hula 2012 for the 49th Merrie Monarch Festival went to Rebecca Lilinoekekapahauomaunakea Sterling of Ka`ōhao (Lanikai), O`ahu. Sterling is a student of Kumu Māpuana de Silva and a member of Hālau Mōhala `Ilima.

At this year’s event, Tiana-Lynn Nālani Manuel is Maui’s only Miss Aloha Hula entry. She is a member of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu hula ʻIliahi and Haunani Paredes of Wailuku, Maui.

Several Maui musicians and vocalists are among the finalists up for consideration for in the 35th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

Whether it’s cleaning up the beach or listening to live local music, Maui’s got fun events planned for Earth Day weekend on April 21 and 22.

Art Maui 2012 is on view through April 20th at the MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery, Wednesday to Sunday from 11 to 5. Admission is free and open to the public.
