Gusty tradewinds in the 15-30 mph+ are tearing up lineups on Maui as the 6-12 ft NW swell is providing some good waves for most spots on the north shore.

At times we have all contemplated just walking out of work to go surfing.

A northwest swell will bring 12 to 18 foot surf to the north and west facing shores of certain islands through 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013.

The weekend saw the best run of surf so far this winter go down at Honolua Bay. The forecast is showing more swell from the northwest, though not quite as big as this past swell.

Surprise east swells are a real treat when you are hoping to catch a few before the sun goes down. Friday is predicting 1-3+ feet coming from the northwest, but is expected to make a drastic jump to 12-foot (advisory level) in the evening.

Maui Boys Dusty Payne (Lahaina) and Ola Eleogram (Hana) killed it at the Volcom Pipe Pro contest and more 20-foot swell on the way for the islands.

For the third consecutive year Hawaii’s John John Florence emerged grand champion of the Volcom Pipe Pro at Banzai Pipeline Saturday, eliminating Hana’s Olamana Eleogram, Chris Ward of San Clemente, Calif., and Australian Josh Kerr in the final.

A decent size 6-10 foot northwest swell is hitting the islands making the surf a little more manageable for the average surfer. Meanwhile, Albee Layer of Maui wins $10K for his world record-breaking 540 degree air.

Rainy conditions accompany a big northwest swell, as surfers are prompted to think twice before paddling out in the murky waters.

We’re in for another spell of Kona winds and a decent 10 ft NW swell for the weekend.

A big NW swell is to light up the upper west side of Maui as the rest of the north shore saw large and unruly surf, with more on the way, while the Legends of the Bay contest goes off at Honolua Bay.

A northwest swell peaked at around noon today, and is expected to gradually diminish below advisory levels overnight.

A spokesperson for Rowley told Maui Now that Rowley “copped a good pounding” and is still recovering.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say the advisory level surf is being generated by a northwest swell.

A massive 18-30ft+ WNW swell is about to blast the islands with more on the way.

Surf heights on Wednesday afternoon were expected to be in the 10 to 15 foot range along the north facing shores, and 10 to 12 feet on the west facing shores of the western-most islands.

With the trades expected to return to normal Tuesday to clear out the Kona haze that has blanketed the islands for the weekend, the surf will still remain in the excellent range.

Forecasters say the northwest swell will continue to build tonight, to 10 to 15 feet on the North shore, and 6 to 9 feet on the East facing shores.

The weekend of the 1/11-13 is shaping up to be a great one for surf. The winds are expected to lighten up and a couple NW swells in the 6-12ft+ range accompanying the light winds.

Surf along affected shores will be 6 to 8 feet this morning, then increase to 7 to 10 feet tonight and Saturday.
