Maui Crime, Nov. 8–14: Burglaries, Break-Ins, Thefts
The total number of burglaries, vehicle break-ins/thefts and vehicle thefts reported this week was 66; three less than reported during the previous week.
Old Haleakalā Highway, S-Bound Closure for Pedestrian Safety
Starting Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, Old Haleakalā Highway will be closed in the south bound direction from Makawao Avenue to Kula Highway due to pedestrian safety concerns, according to an announcement by BCP Construction.

UPDATE: Thousands Lose Power in Nāhiku, Waiehu, Makawao
Due to heavy rains last night that caused trees to come down on power lines as well as a vehicle pole accident in Haiku, approximately 2,850 customers in areas of Waiehu, Haiku and Nahiku are currently without power.

Of the confirmed cases, 68 are Hawaiʻi residents and 11 are visitors. The highest risk areas include Naʻalehu, Captain Cook and Kailua Kona.

Arson Suspect Sought, Accused of Setting Fire to Stolen Vehicle
At around 6 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, police say a lone male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black basketball shorts parked the stolen truck within the front parking lot of the Wailuku Police Station and proceeded to set the interior of the truck on fire.

UPDATE: Testimony on Olowalu Town Project Final EIS Continues
As of noon on Wednesday, Nov. 18, the state Land Use Committee heard from 31 of the 84 Maui residents who signed up to testify at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater regarding acceptance of the Olowalu Town LLC and Olowalu Ekolu LLC’s Final Environmental Impact Statement, a 3,000-page document made available to the public 18 days ago.
Fire at Kōkua Pool Intentionally Set
The fire was reported on Tuesday night near the Kahului Community Center. Officials say a bench made of recycled plastic was burned, and a window near the bench sustained minor damage.
