Haleakalā Backcountry Closed Sunday Due to Hurricane Ignacio

The backcountry area of Haleakalā National Park on Maui will be closed on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015 due to potential impacts associated with Hurricane Ignacio. The rest of the park remains open, including visitor centers. The park is also open for sunrise viewing.

Haleakalā National Park to Begin Pine Control Project

Haleakalā National Park officials held a public meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20, to outline a pine control project scheduled for September through October of this year. The project will target over 3,000 invasive pine trees in Haleakalā Crater.

Through Sea Life Park Hawaiʻi’s Hawaiian green sea turtle Educational Loan Program, Maui Ocean Center has released a total of 54 green sea turtles over the past 17 years to the open ocean. Flood Watch for State Extended Until 6 p.m. Thursday

Currently, the ʻōhiʻa wilt fungus is estimated to infest about 15,000 acres. So far, the disease has not been found on other islands.

The initial call started out as a rescue in the area often referred to as the “Commando Trail.” When firefighters were responding to that call, a second group of hikers was also reported to be stranded at the area often referred to as the “Bamboo Forest Trail.”

At 7:48 p.m. radar showed heavy rain near Honokōwai. A line of heavy showers is also producing heavy rains near Olowalu and Lahaina. The areas of heavy rain were nearly stationary. The National Weather Service has posted a Flood Warning for the island of Maui through 10 p.m.
