Nēnē Awareness Day Contest Kicks Off
The National Park Service turns 99 years old today. To celebrate, Haleakalā National Park is waiving park entrance fees for the day. The park also kicks off the its annual Nēnē Awareness Day contest for middle school students.
NY Man Dies, Pulled From Ocean at Puʻu Kekaʻa
A 51-year-old visitor from Roslyn New York died after being pulled from waters at Puʻu Kekaʻa or “Black Rock” in Kāʻanapali. The incident was reported at 2:45 p.m. on Monday.
Hawaiʻi Urged to Stay Ready, Additional Disturbances Being Tracked
The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two tropical disturbances in the eastern Pacific. Forecasters predict an 80% chance for development into a tropical cyclone and believe that one of the disturbances will cross into the Central Pacific sometime on Thursday.

Council to Discuss Affordable Accessory Dwelling Resolution
The measure seeks to amend the county’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to allow affordable accessory dwellings in the Residential District on lots of at least 5,000 but less than 7,500 square feet.

The National Weather Service has extended a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Maui until 1 p.m. At 9:44 a.m., radar showed that heavy rainfall had diminished, but runoff remained high, and flooding conditions were ongoing.
Schatz Announces Nearly $500,000 in Funding for Tsunami Preparedness
US Senator Brian Schatz today announced that the State of Hawaiʻi will receive nearly a half-million-dollars in grant funding to support the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency in its mission to inform and prepare residents for tsunamis.
