Visitor Falls 50 Feet at Honokohau, Lands on Friend
A 21-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Florida was immobilized when her friend fell 50 feet and landed on top of her during a hike in the hills above Honokohau in West Maui on Thursday, April 12, 2012, officials said. The incident was reported at 4:46 p.m. in the area sometimes referred to as the Three Sisters or Chutes and Ladders near Mile Marker 37 of the Honoapiilani Highway.
Marine Debris a Growing Concern, Piles Found at Waiehu
The northeast facing shoreline tends to get the brunt of incoming ocean debris. Piles of netting have been reported along the shoreline of the Waiehu Golf Course. Crews say they haven’t seen an increase per se yet, but even if it’s twice as much, it would be concerning.
Kahana Door of Faith Congregation Ousted
“We’re going to hold service there. Until they throw us out, we’ll still hold service there. All I know is at this point, it is not over,” said Kahu David Kapaku. The case ended up in court when the Door of Faith Churches and Bible School Inc. on O’ahu listed the property for sale last year, reportedly at an estimated $2.5 million.
19 Maui Burglaries Reported April 1 to 7, 2012
Maui police responded to 19 residential burglaries over a seven day period, between April 1 and 7, 2012. There were five incidents in Haiku, three in Kihei, four in Waiehu, and two incidents each in Kahului and Napili.
Senate Budget Includes Kihei High School and CIP Package
The Hawai’i Senate passed 197 measures on Tuesday, ahead of tomorrow’s Second Crossover deadline. A key measure that gained passage was House Bill 2145, which includes the Senate’s flagship initiative, known as “The Invest in Hawaii Act of 2012.”
Crown Lands Settlement Signed into Law
The settlement represents nearly three decades of work towards an agreement. It conveys contiguous and adjacent parcels in Kaka’ako Makai valued at $200 million to OHA to help in resolving the dispute over past due revenues. The parcels include Fisherman’s Wharf.

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the Michoacan region of Mexico. The earthquake was one of three 5+ magnitude tremors reported within a 15 minute time frame along the West Coast of North America.

HC&S Explains Air Permit Violation
A “malicious fire” at an HC&S field in Kahului last year led to the early harvest of sugar cane in the area, and a subsequent air permit violation. “These circumstances led to confusion about the remaining cane in field 716 and resulted in 25 acres of field 716 being burned when HC&S completed the harvest in November 2011, rather than in 2012,” said Volner.

Funding Sought For Design of Paukukalo Boys & Girls Club
The club currently uses the Paukukalo Community Center, but struggles with space constraints and facility limitations. The Boys & Girls Club recently signed a 35 year lease agreement with the Department of Hawaiian Homelands to utilize the open gym space next to the Paukukalo Community Center that consists of two basketball hoops.
Kahului Airport Access Road Aims to Address Traffic into 2035
Traffic analysis statistics indicate that average daily traffic along Keolani Place, which serves as the primary entrance to Kahului Airport, was estimated at 15,421 vehicles in 2003. The same report projected traffic volume to increase to 22,800 vehicles per day in 2015, and 25,600 per day in 2035.
Maui Sailing Canoe Mast Stolen
Club leaders say their sailing canoe, Hoku Holo o Ke Kai was pushed into the ocean along with its Bigfoot trolley on or around Easter Sunday. The canoe was found undamaged, but the mast was stolen.
