Copper Thefts Leave H3 Call Boxes Inoperable
DOT officials say electrical copper wiring on the H-3 Freeway was cut sometime in late April. Fiber optic communications cabling was also cut, affecting control over electronic message boards that are used to display tunnel lane closure information on the Halawa-side.
One Man Airlifted in Molokai Mountain Rescue
A 61-year-old man was airlifted to safety this morning (Tuesday, May 1, 2012) after being located at the bottom of a gulch on Molokai.

Retired Maui Firefighter Hopes for Marrow Match
Recently retired Maui Fire Captain, Lance Wendel, was diagnosed with leukemia and is on a mission to not only find a donor for himself, but other patients awaiting transplants. Lance and his fellow firefighters are volunteering their time to assist the staff of the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry in educating the public about the importance of becoming donors for patients in Hawaii and beyond.

Another suspicious monk seal death was reported last week, involving a three-year old male monk seal found dead on a northeast Kaua‘i beach on Sunday, April 22. It is the latest in a series of suspicious monk seal deaths that began in November 2011 on Molokai.
