Homestead Hawaiians Request Legislation on Hawaiian Homes Commission Act
The Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations (SCHHA) is partnering with the Association of Hawaiians for Homestead Lands (AHHL-Waitlist), both beneficiary organizations registered with the United States Department of Interior. These statewide homestead associations will work with the Hawaiʻi State Legislature in an effort to enact two administrative amendments to the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920.

The 12th annual Maui Interscholastic League Surf Coaches Certification Clinic had a record number of participants. Thirty-three coaches passed the clinic after completing an open ocean swim, and a program that included ocean risk assessment, ocean rescue, lifesaving techniques, CPR and first aid.

A 39-year-old Lahaina man was arrested for allegedly violating the rules and orders outlined in Mayor Richard Bissen’s 13th Emergency Proclamation Relating to Wildfires, issued on Dec. 5, 2024.
Two short films feature public artworks in Lahaina
Two project films featuring the latest public artworks in Lahaina are being release. The films were created through the collaborative Hui Mo‘olelo: Lahaina program of Maui Public Art Corps, the County of Maui, Hale Hōʻikeʻike at the Bailey House/ Maui Historical Society and the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.

Case introduces congressional bill to end discriminatory shipping practices
Hawai‘i US Rep. Ed Case has reintroduced a bill in the US House to end what he called “the discriminatory and exclusionary shipping practices faced by residents and businesses in Hawai‘i, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands and other US territories.”
Hawaiʻi Attorney General Lopez warns of sales of illegal tobacco products, mostly from China
Hawaiʻi Attorney General Anne Lopez is sending letters to more than 800 Hawaiʻi tobacco retailers and distributors about the distribution and sale of illegal tobacco products. Most of the products originate in China and include electronic smoking devices known as vapes or e-cigarettes and oral tobacco pouch products.

December housing median price nudges close to all-time record in Maui County
The median sales price of a single-family home in Maui County rose to $1,374,238 in December 2024, a 14.5% increase over the same month in 2023 and just 2.4% less than the all-time highest median price of $1,408,287, set in September 2024.
