The Maui Sea Cadets have earned the No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award from the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District, for their ongoing service to Maui’s Adopt-A-Highway Program.

Maui airport firefighters honored for public service, on and off duty
As a volunteer group with Adopt-A-Highway, the airport firefighting team cares for a challenging two-mile stretch of Haleakalā Highway, from mileposts 0 to 2, taking on what program officials describe as one of the dirtiest highway segments on Maui. Their dedication has resulted in the removal of almost 100 bags of trash from the state highway with the help of over 50 volunteers in 2025 alone.

Maui Brewing Company has received the Adopt-A-Highway Nō Ka ‘Oi Highway Hui Award for its volunteerism and exceptional responsiveness to the anti-pollution public service program.
Dash for Trash winners: Kamehameha Schools ʻOhana and Maui’s ʻāina
Students, teachers and family members of Kamehameha Schools ʻOhana collectively earned this year’s Adopt-A-Highway Dash for Trash Champions title for the annual Earth Month public service competition sponsored by the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District.
Two Molokaʻi churches lauded for highway cleanups
The Heart of Aloha Church and Tenrikyo Molokaʻi received the Adopt-A-Highway Nō Ka ʻOi Highway Hui Award for the fourth quarter of 2024 and first quarter of 2025, respectively. Both churches and their volunteers have regularly picked up trash along a two-mile segment of highway for the past eight or more years, helping to prevent roadside rubbish from blowing into the ocean or other sensitive ecosystems.
Adopt-A-Highway recognizes Maui students’ community service
The Maui Preparatory Academy Rotary Interact Club has received the No Ka ʻOi Highway Hui Award from the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District, for the club’s student-led contributions to the Adopt-A-Highway public service program on Maui.
Maui couple awarded for personal commitments to highway clean up
Highways Maui District praised the husband-and-wife team’s personal commitment to caring for Hāna Highway between mileposts 8 and 10, a two-mile segment adopted by Ensign Hawaiian Art and Hypnosis Hawaiʻi, the names of John and Barbara’s respective businesses. The duo has been picking up litter along their route every few months since 2016, typically removing 10 bags of trash each time.
Monkeypod Kitchen honored for volunteerism in South and West Maui
The popular restaurant founded by renowned Chef Peter Merriman has two locations on the island – in Wailea and Kāʻanapali – as well as two Adopt-A-Highway segments: between mile markers 3.5 to 5.5 along Piʻilani Highway, and from mile markers 16 to 18 along Honoapiʻilani Highway.
Construction company Bowers + Kubota receives Adopt-A-Highway award for Maui
The Adopt-A-Highway program on Maui has named construction company Bowers + Kubota as the first No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award recipient of 2022.
Adopt-A-Highway recognizes Molokaʻi teachers with award
The Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association’s Molokaʻi Chapter received the Adopt-A-Highway No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award from the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Highways Division – Maui District (HWY-M). The chapter is the first from Molokaʻi to receive the award.
