Imagine an outdoor classroom on the green grassy slope of a volcano, where the teacher is on horseback, and the students are learning about the soil, water and plants around them. This imaginary classroom is real—it comes to life once a year during the “Agriculture in the Classroom” Field Trip, an annual educational event put on by Maui County Farm Bureau.

Featuring lessons from local farmers, ranchers, and agriculture educators, the Agriculture in the Classroom program is all about sharing knowledge of local agriculture with second-graders.

Until pandemic school regulations enable more than 1,200 second-graders to go Upcountry again, Maui County Farm Bureau is offering a virtual version of its popular “Agriculture in the Classroom” program with video and an activity booklet featuring six lessons from local farmers, ranchers and agriculture educators.

More than 1,265 students from Maui’s public and private elementary schools participated in the MCFB’s annual Ag in the Classroom field trip at Haleakalā Ranch.

The Agriculture in the Classroom program devoted two days of education for second graders representing 15 schools and nearly 1,000 students.
