Maui fishers hope new proposal will ensure there’s enough catch to go around

A team of fishers and marine resource advocates are working to overhaul reef fishing rules — but they say it needs to come with tougher penalties.

Three men cited for gear and net violations at ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve

Three Wailuku men were issued multiple citations within the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on May 21, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers recovered a total of 78 different fish. The men are scheduled to appear in Maui District Court on June 27 at 9 a.m.

New Raw Elements dispensers installed on Maui ahead of non-mineral sunscreen ban

Four mineral sunblock dispensers are now installed along south Maui shores. Two are at the ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u  Natural Area Reserve and a pair are to be installed at Mākena State Park where thousands of people enter the ocean at these locations daily. 

Maui County Enacts Historic Bill Prohibiting Non-Mineral Sunscreens

Bill 135 was introduced by Maui County Councilmember Kelly Takaya King, and was signed into law as Ordinance 5306 by Maui Mayor Michael Victorino on Dec. 6. It will take effect on Oct. 1, 2022.

Maui County Council Passes Historic Bill Prohibiting Non-Mineral Sunscreens

The Maui County Council unanimously passed Bill 135 to prohibit the sale, distribution, or use of non-mineral sunscreens.

Non-Resident User Fees at ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve Start Oct. 1

In 2018-2019, roughly 1,200 people each day visited the open portion of the reserve at Kanahena, with an additional 1,200 passing through the reserve on their way to Keone‘ō‘io (La Perouse Bay). It’s the third-most visited outdoor area on Maui, after Haleakalā National Park and ‘Īao Valley State Monument.

Witnesses Sought: Visitor Severely Injured in Mākena Altercation

The incident was reported on Wednesday March 20, 2019 near the roadway in the area of the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve and involved several males fighting with two male visitors.
