A team of fishers and marine resource advocates are working to overhaul reef fishing rules — but they say it needs to come with tougher penalties.

Three Wailuku men were issued multiple citations within the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on May 21, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers recovered a total of 78 different fish. The men are scheduled to appear in Maui District Court on June 27 at 9 a.m.

Four mineral sunblock dispensers are now installed along south Maui shores. Two are at the ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u  Natural Area Reserve and a pair are to be installed at Mākena State Park where thousands of people enter the ocean at these locations daily. 

Bill 135 was introduced by Maui County Councilmember Kelly Takaya King, and was signed into law as Ordinance 5306 by Maui Mayor Michael Victorino on Dec. 6. It will take effect on Oct. 1, 2022.

The Maui County Council unanimously passed Bill 135 to prohibit the sale, distribution, or use of non-mineral sunscreens.

In 2018-2019, roughly 1,200 people each day visited the open portion of the reserve at Kanahena, with an additional 1,200 passing through the reserve on their way to Keone‘ō‘io (La Perouse Bay). It’s the third-most visited outdoor area on Maui, after Haleakalā National Park and ‘Īao Valley State Monument.

The incident was reported on Wednesday March 20, 2019 near the roadway in the area of the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve and involved several males fighting with two male visitors. 

Results of the survey suggest that coral reefs can be managed to build resilience and increase survivability in an uncertain climate future.

The area has been closed for two weeks, after numerous tiger sharks were spotted, apparently coming close to shore to follow pupping reef sharks.

The ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve is officially closed again as of 1:19 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.  Maui Now has confirmed with state officials that a 10-foot Tiger shark was sighted at 11 a.m. today, and was still seen at 1 p.m. 

Maui Electric will be upgrading power lines along Mākena Road near Big Beach to La Perouse Bay from Monday, April 2 to Thursday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 2:30p. 

The snorkeler was brought to shore after reportedly experiencing a medical emergency in waters at the ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve.

Access to the ocean at Maui’s ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve open after a nearly two week closure when a Humpback whale carcass washed ashore on Dec. 30.

Shoreline access at ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve on Maui has been closed due to a whale carcass on shore. This is the fifth dead Humpback report since November 11th.

A hearing will be held tonight during which testimony will be accepted on the state’s proposal to establish parking fees for the ‘Āhihi-Kina‘u Natural Area Reserve on Maui.

Visitors to the ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve and Keone‘oi‘o (La Perouse Bay) area are advised that renovation of the Kanahena parking area is expected to create limited parking and traffic delays from Monday, Nov. 14 to Jan. 15, 2017.
