Tetsuji “Tets” Yamazaki of Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has become the first Maui hotel general manager to be awarded “General Manager of the Year – Resort Property” by the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

The hotel industry will continue moving toward recovery in 2022, but the path will be uneven and potentially volatile, with full recovery still several years away, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s 2022 State of the Hotel Industry Report. 

Supply chain disruptions are impacting the operations of 86% of surveyed hotels, with 74% of hotel operators stating the disruptions are negatively impacting their business revenue, according to a recent survey  of American Hotel & Lodging Association members.

Hawaiʻi hotels are projected to lose $1.18 billion in business travel revenue in 2021, down 77.4% compared to 2019 levels, according to a recent report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Kalibri Labs.

The US hotel industry is projected to end 2021 down more than $59 billion in business travel revenue compared to 2019, with Hawaiʻi hotels projected to be down nearly $1.2 billion, according to a new report released by the American Hotel & Lodging Association and Kalibri Labs.

The legislation threatens to eliminate three of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s four strategic pillars, removing the agency’s ability to do anything except marketing Hawaiʻi, while dismantling the State’s ability to effectively manage tourism for the benefit of Hawaiʻi’s residents, culture and environment.
