Attorney General Anne Lopez and 48 other attorneys general called on the Federal Communications Commission to strengthen rules that would cut off scammers’ access to legitimate telephone numbers.

Attorney General Anne Lopez has received a 10-page letter, with attachments, from Edward Halealoha Ayau who is the attorney representing Maui Police Detective Kamuela Lanakila Mawae. That letter addresses legal concerns regarding the status of Hawaiʻi as an occupied State and potential war crimes being committed by law enforcement officers, according to a news release from Ayau.  

Hawaiʻi Attorney General Anne Lopez led a coalition of 19 attorneys general in submitting a comment letter opposing the Office of Personnel Management’s proposed rule to create a new employment classification in the federal civil service, Schedule F. This classification, if implemented, she said, would strip workplace protections from tens of thousands of federal civil service employees. 

Attorney General Anne Lopez and a bipartisan coalition of 46 attorneys general is calling on the Federal Communications Commission to improve its Robocall Mitigation Database and close what they say has effectively been an unmonitored loophole that bad actors exploit to access the US telephone network.

The EPA’s final rule will reduce 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions and result in $10 billion annual climate benefits, $300 million in annual non-greenhouse gas public health benefits, and $3.5 billion in annual operational savings for the trucking industry over the lifetime of these vehicles, according to rule backers. Currently, the EPA’s final rule is being challenged by 25 other states, which seek to stop emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles from taking effect.

Attorney General Anne Lopez filed a civil complaint on behalf of the State of Hawaiʻi, against 25 manufacturers of aqueous firefighting foam (AFFF) products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) including 3M Company, DuPonte De Nemours Inc., and Tyco Fire Products LP.

Attorney General Anne Lopez joins a coalition of 26 states in sending a letter to the Federal Communications Commission emphasizing the potential harm in the use of artificial intelligence by telemarketers and asking the federal government to strongly restrict such usage.

Subpoenas have been served upon the Maui Emergency Management Agency, the County of Maui Department of Public Works, and the County of Maui Department of Water Supply. The timeline for the release of the Phase 1 findings is dependent on the Fire Safety Research Institute gaining access to all facts before completing Phase 1.
