Authorities say the gas leak in West Maui earlier today resulted when contractors, working on renovations at 900 Front Street (Lahaina Center), ruptured a two-inch underground propane gas main line.

According to Capt. Haʻake, the fire caused $250,000 in damage to the structure, $50,000 to its contents, and $50,000 to miscellaneous vehicles within the property including a Hummer mentioned in news reports.

Bystanders told authorities that it appeared that the fire started near the vehicles and spread to the structure, according to fire officials, but the cause remains under investigation.

The incident was reported at 10:41 a.m. at the rear of a residence on Liholiho Street. Upon arrival, firefighters reportedly found an area of brush on fire located directly behind two homes.

The promotions are for Fire Fighter IIIs Bram Denhaan, Geoffrey Bogar, Lee Theros, and Shawn Rogers. Promotions for all four individuals goes into effect on Nov. 1, 2012.
