The County of Maui will close two temporary service sites at 5 p.m., Sept. 8, 2026, in West Maui and in Central Maui after the National Weather Service (NWS) Flood Watch tied to Hurricane Lowell expired this afternoon, according to Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

All state and County of Kaua‘i offices, along with Kauaʻi Community College, will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 11, as crews restore power, remove debris, and address other storm impacts.

(Update: 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026) A risk of flash flooding risk remains in the Hawaiian Islands due to Hurricane Lowell. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings have since been cancelled for Hawaiʻi.

Damaging winds, heavy rain and powerful waves continue impacting Kauaʻi this morning as the core of Lowell moves NNW of Niʻihau and further away from Kauaʻi.

Hurricane Lowell is at its closest approach to the islands, currently passing just west of Niʻihau, brining damaging winds, heavy rain and powerful waves to Kauaʻi County. Lowell remains a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and higher gusts.

(Update: 5 p.m. HST Monday, Sept. 7, 2026) Dangerous conditions are expected on Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu as Hurricane Lowell brings flash flooding, damaging waves and high winds.

Update: 2:52 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026) Conditions are deteriorating for Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu with flash flooding, damaging waves and high winds expected from Lowell.

(Update: 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 7, 2026) A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, as well as the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Oʻahu as Lowell moves on a path NNE and has picked up speed to 14 mph. The National Weather Service says it expects conditions to deteriorate this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Watch for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. Hurricane conditions are possible and tropical storm conditions are expected in Kauaʻi County beginning Monday afternoon or evening.

Category 3 Hurricane Lowell continues on a path due north with tropical storm conditions expected on Kauaʻi and Niʻihau by late Monday.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau as Lowell continues to turn more toward the north-northeast tonight into Monday while accelerating. The eye of Lowell is currently forecast to make it’s closest approach to the main Hawaiian Islands Monday night, passing 100 to 200 miles west of Niʻihau.

Hurricane Lowell continues on a path WNW, with a northward turn expected on Sunday. A Hurricane Watch has been issued for the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nīhoa to French Frigate Shoals; and a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Kauaʻi County, including the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.

Hurricane Lowell is forecast to move close to Kauaʻi County Monday night as a category 2 to 3 hurricane.

County of Maui officials are encouraging residents and visitors to remain ready as two hurricanes — Lowell and Karina — approach the Hawaiian Islands, less than a month after Tropical Storm Lala affected the state. With multiple weather systems interacting, there is more uncertainty in forecasts, National Weather Service officials emphasized.

The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Oʻahu and Maui County; and the Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued for Kauaʻi County.

Weather impacts from Hurricane Lane could be felt into the weekend as the Category 3 system forges a slow advance up the island chain.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa is updating the public about Maui County response as Hurricane Lane continues its path toward the islands.  The press conference began at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018.

A FLOOD WARNING is now in effect for the island of Maui until 2:45 p.m. At 11:30 a.m., heavy rain continues over east Maui from Keʻanae to Kīpahulu.
