The Maui Charter Commission once again conducted public meetings on Monday and Tuesday to hear testimony and deliberate on proposed County Charter amendments leading up to submission of its Draft Report to the County Council on Feb. 18.

Virtual Meeting Set for Public Input on Formation of Maui Dept. of Agriculture

A virtual community meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, to gather public input on the formation of the new Department of Agriculture.In 2020, Maui County voters approved a Charter amendment to establish a Department of Agriculture in the County of Maui. The chapter for the new department is effective July 1, 2022.

No Proposals Adopted at Maui Charter Commission Thursday Meeting

Over the next several months the Maui County Charter Commission will discuss 130 charter amendment proposals that will be considered for placement on the November 2022 ballot.  At its meeting on Thursday, the Commission chose not to adopt seven of the proposals placed before it, deferred action on another, and transferred two to the County Council.  

Maui Charter Commission to Consider Proposing Ranked-Choice Voting

At the upcoming meeting Commissioners will consider whether to adopt ranked-choice voting as the electoral system for council elections.  A ranked-choice voting system is one in which voters may rank candidates by preference on their ballots, a significant change from our current system whereby voters may only vote for one candidate in each race.  

Community Input Sought at Maui Charter Commission Meeting

This is the latest in a series of meetings scheduled over the next several months by the Commission to obtain input and insights from the community related to proposed Charter amendments that will be considered for placement on the ballot in November 2022.

Proposed Charter Amendments on Friday’s Council Agenda

Six proposals to reform the structure of Maui County’s government will be considered for passage on first reading on Friday at 9 a.m. The resolutions that advance on first reading this Friday will be heard by the council for second and final reading on July 24.

The name change was directed by voters who chose to change the agency’s title via charter amendment during the Nov. 8 General Election for the State of Hawaiʻi.
